Going Green and Making Green

Well now you can both relax in the lap of luxury getting your nails done and do something positive for the environment by visiting Recess in Beverly Hills, CA. Nidhi Lal, the owner of this new and prestigious spa, broke away from her background as a Real Estate Broker and ventured into the world of beauty to pursue a business she felt she could really feel passionate about.

“After my father passed away, I decided to focus my time and energy on things that were meaningful and rewarding,” said Nidhi. “I frequented day spas after his death and found a lot of solace in the walls of a spa. I knew that I always loved beauty products and decided to take a risk in order to pursue a more satisfying life.”

Building the newly opened spa was no piece of cake with all the considerations made to construct one of the first completely green spas. Along with all the other detailed tasks of opening a new hair and beauty business (that all readers can appreciate), Nidhi took great care in ensuring that every aspect of her business was environmentally-friendly. “My path is to raise the standards of the industry while educating my clients on the importance of every decision I had to make in constructing the space,” said Nidhi. “From the type of paint, wattage of the lighting, down to the towels used in their services, I hope to make my mark on the world by making it a better place for the community that I service.”

With the new ‘green’ craze, this is no doubt a smart move for differentiating a business from the local competition, but going down this path is also a smart business decision. “Initially, it wasn’t my intention of building all ‘green’; however, the more I researched, the greener I wanted to go,” said Nidhi. “I found that the difference in startup costs was about 30%, but it ended up paying for itself with the long-term energy saving benefits and health advantages. After reading about the repercussions to technicians’ health, I was committed to creating a space that wouldn’t weigh on my conscience. I couldn’t handle being responsible for someone’s cancer.”

While a lot of people may have never considered such an option as part of their business plan, Shortcuts has already thought of it for you! First, all Shortcuts clients receive hardware that is certified by all applicable environmental agencies including Energy Star so our clients can rest assured that they have the most efficient setup that will reduce energy consumption.

Other considerations are more on the process side of the business, which is one of the many ways that Shortcuts has differentiated itself from other providers. Shortcuts focuses on supporting salons and spas with procedures that are beneficial to the business and flexible to adapt as the business grows. “I have two [computer] terminals, so that my salon can be as green as possible,” said Nidhi. “Instead of writing up a ticket as they do in most salons, I like the efficiency of having a lookup station where we can send the add-ons to the front reception desk instantly.”

Nidhi opened her doors and immediately had a warm welcome from the community, members of the press and celebrities that shared Nidhi’s passion for the earth. Everyone has considered the environment from choosing recycled paper to taking cloth bags to the grocery store, so the appeal of Recess is something that everyone can relate to. And Recess found that being environmentally-conscience did not require any compromise in style; instead Nidhi skillfully wove the décor around the environmental elements to create the perfect ambiance.

Whether you have considered the carbon footprint or your own personal footprint, Nidhi is an inspiration to follow as the rewards of creating a business that fits in with all personal ethos is what we continually strive for. Nidhi puts it best with her personal motto, “Live well.”
